Living and Non Living Research

Today we began our research for our living and non living poster project. We had 6 laptops to share. The laptop leaders were able to log on, access Internet Explorer, and find Pebble Go. The laptop leaders then found the video on the living or non living topic the group chose to learn about. The kids are researching hot weather, stars, water, bears, penguins, and pets. The kids also had nonfiction books about their topics.

Tomorrow we will continue our research and begin creating our posters.

We began our living and non living unit last week with a read aloud to introduce the topic and a walk to search for living and non living things around our school grounds. We also used our class iPads to document our findings. The kids took turns being photographers and when we came back to the classroom we used AirPlay to project the images from the iPads to the SMARTboard screen.

This week we used AirPlay again to look at the images of the living and non living things we found on our walk and refresh our memories about what living and non living means. We had an interesting discussion about the difference between dead and non living.

This week begins an interdisciplinary living and non living project. We will incorporate writing, nonfiction reading skills, research skills, and technology skills to research and create living and non living posters. We will also gain experience with social and presentation skills to share our work at the end of the week.

Today we made a class poster with each student contributing a sentence and picture. As the week progresses, the kids will begin researching and creating their own posters. More info to come!

Socks Needed!

Socks make great erasers for the white boards we use to practice letter formation, spelling, and number formation. You can even store your dry erase marker inside.
If you would like to donate clean old socks that are missing their mate to our classroom it would much appreciated! Please only send socks that are large enough for a dry erase marker to fit inside. We would also appreciate a pair or package of new socks. Whatever works for you! Thanks so much!

Reminders

Monthly Learning Updates
Your monthly update on literacy will be coming home this Friday. Overall the class is showing growth with letter sounds! Most students have mastered their letter sounds so next month I will send home information about your child’s progress with sight words. If your child is struggling with identifying letter sounds I will continue to send those updates home.

Celebration of the Arts
Please join us this Friday, March 14, from 6:30-8:30 for our Celebration of the Arts. There will be art activities for your child to create as well as performances and auction items. Your child’s artwork will also be on display in the hallway.

Summer School
Please enroll in summer school as soon as you can. This is a great opportunity for learning!

Punctuation Investigation

Kindergarteners learn so much about writing. They go from scribbles and simple drawings to detailed drawings with words and sentences. Our focus lately has been sentences. Right now we are investigating punctuation in real books to learn how we can use punctuation in our own writing. Here are some of the kids first attempts.

Racing Bears: Number Sense, Problem Solving and Social Skills at Work

The kids think playing Racing Bears is great…What’s not to love? You get to play with a friend and work together to race all your bears to the end. And then you get to play again!?

The teacher loves Racing Bears too! While they play the students develop counting and number sense skills. They problem solve and strategize to decide which bear to move when. They develop social and friendship skills as they interact with another child(problem solving often comes up again).
