Summer School

I will be handing out summer school information at parent teacher conferences. Summer school runs from June 8th to July 2nd. Summer school registration forms are due April 15th.
I encourage everyone to sign up for summer school as it is a great learning opportunity. Summer school includes academic activities as well as enrichment activities like crafts. Many students benefit from additional time in a structured learning environment.

Checklist this Week

In place of the weekly checklist this week I am sending home a learning report about sight words. We have been practicing memorizing our sight words so we can read and spell these words. Sight words often are “rule breakers” and can’t be tapped or sounded out so we memorize these common words instead. Please practice reading and writing sight words with your child.

Stomach Bug!

The stomach bug has hit our school! We are cleaning and sanitizing to help prevent the spread of germs as much as we can. Please help us by keeping your child home if they throw up or have a fever. Your child must be fever free and symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school to avoid infecting others.

Thank you!

Greetings from Ms. Wright

Hello! My name is Ashley Wright and I will be student teaching in Ms. Layla’s classroom for the next 13 weeks.

I’m originally from Wentzville, Missouri but have lived in Columbia since 2012. I currently attend school at Westminster College in Fulton. This is the last semester of my undergrad and I will be graduating with my degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in May.

When I’m not at school, I love to cook and try new restaurants. I have a new puppy named Zoe and my family has two other dogs, Holley and Brice. I also love to read and watch movies. Some of my favorites are Up, Mulan, and Despicable Me.

I’m very excited for the opportunity to work in Ms. Layla’s class this semester. So far I am enjoying learning about each student and I can’t wait to learn more about them as the year progresses. I know it’s going to be a great 13 weeks!

Late Start Tomorrow January 7th

Tomorrow will be a late start day due to the extremely cold temperatures. Russell’s doors will open at 9:55 to start breakfast and students will be able to go to their classrooms at 10:00. Buses will run as usual-except 2 hours later. Adventure Club is cancelled. Dismissal times will not change.

Snacks Needed

We have snack each afternoon-please send an egg, dairy, and peanut free snack to school each month for your child to share with the class. We have 21 students. Here are some ideas of snacks to send.

Raisins and other dried fruit (not yogurt or milk-chocolate covered)

Gummy fruit snacks

Cereal (Cheerios, Alpha-bits, Cinnamon Toast CrunchChex, and many other milk/egg/peanut-free brands)

Regular salted pretzels, potato, or corn chips (without flavored coatings like cheddar, sour-cream and onion, honey-mustard, etc.)

Crackers (Wheat Thins, Ritz Crackers, many brands of saltines but some saltines are made with milk)

Graham crackers (Honey Maid, Country Fare and Hy-Vee Honey grahams)

Animal cookies/crackers (many brands are fine, some contain milk or egg)

Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or washed berries)

Baby carrots or carrot sticks

Fresh fruits and veggies are appreciated. We do have limited fridge space to store these.

Thank you!

Sharing Activity

Our class will be having a special sharing activity on Wednesday, January 7th. Please help your child choose ONE item from home to bring to school and share with the class. This item may be a toy, photo, book…anything your child would like to share. The only exceptions would be play guns, swords or other items that represent violence and are not appropriate for school. Please also note that while we will do our best to take care of our items at school it is possible for things to get lost or broken so valuable or extra special items should remain at home. Thanks!

Welcome Ms. Wright

I am happy to announce that after winter break Ashley Wright will be joining our class as our student teacher! Ashley is currently a Westminster student earning her undergraduate degree in elementary education with an emphasis in early childhood as well. I will let her write a post after she gets settled in to tell you more about herself.

Ms. Wright and I will be working collaboratively to meet the needs of all the learners in our class. It will be a fun and fulfilling learning experience for all involved.
